CIS: Making a Difference in Children’s Lives #backpack11

splashmediaWhen I was a little girl, I was very lucky.  I had a wonderful family that always took care of me and made sure I had what I needed and most the time, what I wanted.  When I was home, I always knew I was safe, loved and supported.

I remember when it was time for me to leave the comfort of my home and head to school, I was terrified.  I was a rather shy child and a bit of an ugly duckling.

However, I was lucky in that arena as well.  I was blessed with some amazing teachers that made me feel special and helped to bring me out of my shell.

If anyone ever tries to tell me that teachers aren’t important or can’t make a difference in a child’s life, I would know firsthand that just isn’t true.

I don’t have a lot of memories from my childhood, but I have always remembered the names Ms. McCoy and Ms. Bodnar.  I am so thankful to both of them for making a shy, awkward girl feel like she had a smile that lit up a room.

As I mentioned above, I am lucky that I had such a wonderful family and teachers in my early years of school.   There are so many other kids that are not that fortunate.

For several reasons there are children that drop out of school every year.  Perhaps it is due to a bad home life, problems only they know or they just struggle with learning, either way it is a hard thing as a mom for me to swallow.

I would like to think that every child has the opportunity to get the education they deserve, but that isn’t always the case.  Luckily there are organizations out there that are making a change in the lives of children.  Organizations like Communities In Schools.

PrintFill the Backpack selected Communities In Schools to work with  this year because they are an amazing organization that truly makes a difference

Here is a stat taken from the CIS website:

With our support, almost 98% of the students we serve remain in school

One of the things I personally love most about Communities In Schools is that in addition to helping the students, they also help the teachers to better serve their classes.  If a teacher is given better tools for working with high risk youth, then they will be more effective at their jobs.

Communities In Schools works within the public school system, determining student needs and establishing relationships with local businesses, social service agencies, health care providers, and parent and volunteer organizations to provide needed resources.

I am so honored to introduce you guys to such a wonderful organization.  I encourage you to visit their website to learn more about how they are helping communities.

Special thanks to all the people out there that are making a difference in a child’s life.  Even if you feel it goes unnoticed, it doesn’t go unnoticed to the child you help.
